Oakland Tribune: My Word: On Medicare's Anniversary, the Threat to Its Existence Looms
Upon winning control of Congress, Republicans started the year with a vow to repeal health care reform -- and with it, new benefits and improvements to Medicare. In April, House Republicans put forth their budget, which detailed their vision for Medicare: end it. No more guarantee. No more affordable benefits. Instead of Medicare guaranteeing benefits as it does today, the Republican plan would give seniors an underfunded voucher to use toward the purchase of private health insurance.

(Pete's Op-Ed) Financial Times: We need a Tobin tax to fund development
The world’s largest financial institutions regularly buy and sell massive amounts of world currencies seeking to make quick profits. A tiny tax on these transactions, many of which are purely speculative, would raise billions of dollars to invest in key domestic and global priorities, such as fighting disease, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and protecting our children from poverty. It would also curtail some of the irresponsible behaviour that contributes to global economic instability and market volatility.

This is a historic day. We have worked to enact health reform in America for decades.  President Johnson took a major step when he signed Medicare into law in 1965 and guaranteed every American age sixty-five and over quality, affordable health care.  Forty-five years later, we are about to extend that guarantee to all Americans.
