Pete Stark on Education
From child care for our youngest children, to public education, afterschool programs and college, Pete Stark believes every child in America deserves a high quality education that promotes their cognitive, social and emotional development. Small class sizes, a rich curriculum, good pay for teachers, and safe schools are essential for making education high quality. He also believes everyone should be able to afford to go to college and supports Pell grants and increased access to student loans to make this possible. Pete knows that as a country, we can't afford to skimp on the education we provide our children.
For children to succeed in school, they also need to be healthy. Pete has supported the Children's Health Insurance Program and recognizes the difficulty in many states -- including California -- in implementing the program so all children can have health insurance. In response, Pete introduced MediKids, a bill that would achieve the same goal for children that Medicare achieved for seniors and people with disabilities – that goal is universal coverage. It would automatically enroll every child at birth into a new, comprehensive federal safety net health insurance program.
