Pete Stark on Homeland Security

Protecting Americans from terrorist attacks is a vital national priority.  The Department of Homeland Security is currently fragmented and ineffective.  Pete Stark supports redirecting resources to the following priorities:

  • Hiring, training, and equipping police, fire, and other first responders;
  • allocating 100% of homeland security grants based on risk rather than distributing them evenly across the country based on politics;
  • scanning 100% of port containers and airline cargo;
  • and, investing in our hospitals and training public health workers so we are ready for an Avian flu pandemic or biological attack.
An effective war on terrorism does not require sacrificing our Constitutionally protected rights and freedoms.  A confident and fully prepared government need not resort to spying on its own citizens, which is why Pete Stark has been a staunch advocate in Congress for protecting our civil liberties against overzealous attacks by the Bush Administration.
