Pete Stark on Social Security
Pete Stark is committed to preserving and strengthening the Social Security system. It has provided quality retirement, disability and spousal benefits for over sixty years. While changes are needed to enhance the system, President Bush's plans to privatize Social Security will hurt low-income workers, women, minorities and people with disabilities-- the very people the program most needs to help. In fact, privatization of Social Security will make the program less solvent.
Pete Stark is pleased that we were able to defeat President Bush’s Social Security privatization plan. Now that his term is coming to and end, we have some breathing room. But, make no mistake about it, Republican President candidate John McCain and his supporters in Congress are still very committed to privatizing Social Security. That’s why it is so important that we elect Barack Obama as our next President.
With Obama in the White House and a Democratic Congress, we can turn our attention to improving – not tearing down – our vital safety net of Social Security.
